Computer Vision Syndrome

What is a computer vision syndrome?

Computer Vision Syndrome, also known as digital eye strain, is a set of eye problems that occurs with prolonged use of digital gadgets like computers, laptops, mobile phones, tablets etc. In recent years, electronic devices have become an indispensable part of work and life for most of us. Our eyes suffer extreme strain due to constant staring at screens. Some of the common complaints of computer users are eyestrain, blurred vision, double vision, dry eyes, headaches, neck & shoulder pain, etc. While these symptoms may be temporary and will decline with rest, however, over time, these symptoms become chronic and distressing. With a few simple and easy solutions, one can prevent or reduce eye problems related to computer vision syndrome.

What are the common signs and symptoms of computer vision syndrome?

Cataract

You may experience one or more of the below-mentioned symptoms:

  • Eyestrain
  • Burning sensation, itchy eyes
  • Blurred vision
  • Double vision
  • Dry eyes
  • Red eyes
  • Headaches
  • Neck and shoulder pain

What causes Computer vision syndrome?

Reading a book, newspaper or any other printed page and reading or watching a digital screen are two altogether different visual experience. Digital screens put the eyes under much higher strain. Because the letters on a computer or other digital devices are not sharp or precise, the text on a computer has a reduced level of contrast, a constant glare and reflection on the screen that causes an extreme level of stress on the eyes. Often, one must tilt the head and neck to view the monitor. As a result, there is additional demand and strain on the eyes to focus.

Uncorrected or under corrected vision problems are major contributing factors to increase the severity of the computer-related eyestrain (CVS). Those using improper specs or contact lens tend to suffer more. Poor posture causes muscle spasms or pain in the neck, shoulder or back. Hence, those using such devices for prolonged periods are at greater risk of developing CVS.The severity of the symptoms depends on the amount of screen time and general health of the eyes.

How is CVS diagnosed?

Maa Nursing Home and NetraJyoti Eyecare Centre offers a comprehensive eye checkup. Here, the doctors will thoroughly examine the eyes to evaluate the extent of eye strain. The doctor will enquire about the nature of work and the use of the computer. He will further note the patient's medical history, other health problems, regular medicines, etc. Based on the information and test results, the doctor will determine the presence of CVS or digital eyestrain and advise treatment accordingly.

How do you treat Computer vision syndrome?

The first and foremost treatment is to change way the digital screen is viewed. The Golden Rule is to use 20 / 20 / 20. After every 20 minutes of watching the screen, rest the eyes for 20 seconds by looking 20 feet away. It allows eyes to rest and refocus. Other measures include as follows:

  1. Use of anti-glare eyeglasses, specifically for computer use.
  2. Use of Special lens designs, lens powers or lens tints or coatings
  3. Vision Therapy: Some computer users experience problems focusing and coordinating their eyes. Eyeglasses or contact lens cannot correct it adequately. Vision Therapy is a structured program to train the eyes and brain to work together for better coordination and focus.

Other steps include

  1. Control lighting and glare on the device screen
  2. Establish proper working distances and posture for screen viewing
  3. Regular Eye check-ups
  4. Use correct eyeglasses
  5. Minimize the impact of harmful blue lights from a digital screen with the use of glare reduction filters, proper positioning of computer and room lighting
  6. Maintain clean, dust-free screens to improve clarity and reduce glares
  7. Adjust the height and distance of the computer screen at the worktable
  8. Use an adjustable copyholder to place reference materials
  9. Take breaks from watching the screen for long periods.
  10. Use the 20 - 20 – 20 golden formula.
